Box Wood Winery

Middleburg’s Boxwood Winery is both right at home and far from the ordinary. The winery is the realization of a dream for owners Rita and John Kent Cooke, the former Washington Redskins owner and president, who bought the estate in 2001. The Cookes commissioned renowned architect Hugh Jacobsen to design a winery with modern, clean lines, but one that agrees with its surroundings.

The result is a four-part complex that is stunning in its simplicity on the outside while filled with high-quality, high-tech streamlined inner workings. Boxwood is dedicated to making wines in the Bordeaux tradition, and as such the hillsides around the winery are densely dotted with vines of Bordeaux varietals, all certified by the French government.

Located in Middleburg, VA, Salamander Touch features goods and fine gifts essential to living the luxury resort lifestyle. Owned and managed by Salamander Hospitality, the offerings include custom fine Italian linens inspired by Sheila C. Johnson, decorative pillows designed by Thomas Pheasant, fine leather goods, Mistral scented bath, body and home products, Lepine fine writing instruments crafted in France and precious gemstones and logoed resort wear. http://www.salamanderresort.com/salamander_story/salamander_touch/

Bold Gold!

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Every woman needs a collection of gold jewelry. You need a pair of great gold hoops, a big chunky gold necklace, a gold cup or several gold bangles, and a bold gold ring. The designs shown here are by Toby Pomeroy, who was raised in the foothills of the Himalayas, and creates “nature-infused” jewelry that is both beautiful and sustainable. Typical metal mining relies on extremely harsh and damaging methods to recover miniscule amounts of precious product from huge swaths of land (usually less than 10g per ton of earth for gold). Holes are blasted to remove and pulverize the dirt/rock, water is added to create a slurry with gold dust in suspension, then solvents are added (mainly cyanide) to chemically isolate the gold. The run off from this process is disastrous and the resultant trauma to the landscape is also a great concern.
Toby has become “one of the first industry artisans to exclusively use reclaimed metals” for his 100% reused gold and silver jewelry. To accomplish this he contacted gold suppliers and refiners to supply his cause with reclaimed material. Toby offers a plentiful selection, many hand pounded, and shaped into rings, earrings, pendants, and bracelets all with a natural aura. Come see his collection at Mystique Jewelers.

With gold prices so high, you should also consider reclaiming your own gold! Take the gold jewerlry you never wear or jewelry you’ve inherited, and create something new that you will love and get use out of.
